About Us

Northwest Michigan Housing Search is designed to help those in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties find help with housing and homes they can afford. This website was developed for Community Housing Choices, a program administered by Networks Northwest, in partnership with the Grand Traverse Region Housing Task Force.

Community Housing Choices

Community Housing Choices is a program of New Designs for Growth, administered by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments (NWMCOG). The goal of Community Housing Choices is to ensure sufficient housing choices for the region’s workforce, using education, collaboration, and advocacy to promote the adoption of land use and economic tools that will contribute to livable, vibrant communities. Community Housing Choices is reaching out to governments, nonprofits, developers, and citizens to help initiate change in our communities. Some of our activities include:

  • Communication and outreach
  • Technical assistance and resources
  • Best practices research and analysis

Grand Traverse Region Housing Task Force

The Housing Task Force was formed in the early 1990s, in response to a need identified by the Grand Traverse County Community Collaborative. The lack of affordable housing had become a human service, business, land use, and quality of life issue in the region, and stakeholders recognized that the problem must be addressed by a group that included a broad base of representatives. Bankers, realtors, human services and government representatives, MSU Extension, consumers, and other stakeholders rallied to form the Housing Task Force.

After  its creation, the Housing Task Force, with the support of Rotary Charities, spearheaded a 5-county housing needs study and a subsequent business plan that was used to form HomeStretch, a nonprofit housing corporation.  The Housing Task Force also served as a sponsoring group for the Greater Grand Traverse Continuum of Care, which garners funds and seeks collaboration to address homelessness. Over the years, the Housing Task Force has hosted many speakers on housing related topics and has provided a focused networking opportunity for everyone with an interest in housing.

The Housing Task Force meets four times a year. Staff support is provided by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments/Community Housing Choices. For meeting dates and times, please contact the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments at 231-929-5000.
